How To Care for Your KUDU Open Fire Cooking Grill

A little bit of TLC goes a long way to ensure that your KUDU open fire cooking grill lasts a lifetime. That's why we've compiled a list of simple but effective ways to show your KUDU Grill some love.
FOREVER YOUNG
At KUDU Grills, we believe you should only have to buy your dream grill once. And after you've lived a life of good food and even better memories, you can pass your grill down to the next lucky outdoor cooker who will continue the family tradition. From a garage-built prototype in 2015 to the refined KUDU of today, we're proud to have built a grill that will outlive even the Nokia 3310.
THE BUILD
Constructed from heavy-gauge steel with ultra-high temperature ceramic coating and stainless-steel fasteners, the KUDU defines durability. We've measured all forms of wear and tear on an ordinary open fire cooking grill and applied these findings to the KUDU. From the calm summer weather in the backyard to harsh wind, rain, or even a salty sea breeze, the KUDU is built to last. This is why we confidently offer a 5-year limited warranty.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Though durable, maintenance plays its part in keeping the KUDU in top form, we recommend giving your KUDU an oil treatment once a month. It'll take you less than 5 minutes – and for an open fire cooking grill that you love, a little rust protection and seasoning will go a long way in extending its life. Before you start, clean out the ash from the base of your grill.
STEP 1:
With a dry cloth, wipe down your entire KUDU, including the legs, inside, outside and bottom of the base. Don’t forget to wipe out the nooks and crannies, especially around the cut-out KUDU letters on the base.
STEP 2:
From top to bottom, give your KUDU an oil down. Wipe a light layer of Pam, grapeseed oil, peanut oil, or regular old vegetable oil alongside the whole grill with a paper towel. For extra precaution, we recommend purchasing a KUDU Grill Cover. It is a heavy-duty canvas cover with a specific design for keeping your KUDU protected from the elements.
GRILL GRATE CLEANING
Before cooking, start a fire to burn off any leftover food residue, use a grill brush for those stubborn pieces. Next, grab a raw onion, cut it in half, stick a fork in it, and get to work, rubbing the onion back and forth over the grill grate. Quick, cheap, and non-toxic, onions make for the perfect grill grate cleaning product. You'll see the difference almost immediately. And if you're using charcoal, even better! When you're done, throw the onion into the coals to add flavor to whatever you're grilling.

CAST IRON SKILLET CLEANING
Your cast iron skillet is a special piece of cooking equipment and needs a little extra attention because of it. When you’re done cooking, give the skillet a gentle scrub with water, but no soap. If you need an abrasive element, use a little table salt to help clean. When you're done, dry your skillet with a cloth or paper towel immediately. Make sure you do not let it drip-dry - this will cause it to rust. Wipe it down with a thin coat of oil (anything with a high smoke point like sunflower, or canola will work), and you'll be rust-free for the next grill. About once a year, when your cast iron skillet is looking a bit tired, season it in the oven. Turn the oven to its hottest temperature, cover your clean skillet in a thin coat of oil, and put it in the oven for about an hour. Repeat this process another 2 times, wiping your skillet with oil in between. Then let it bake in the hot oven an hour at a time. Do this for about 3 hours in total. And don’t forget to be extra careful when handling the hot skillet (you’ll need thick oven mitts or a proper grill glove).
