Kevin Gillespie has wanted to be a chef for as long as he can remember; the Atlanta native grew up watching his grandmother in the kitchen and partaking in communal meals with his extended family, and the nurturing, camaraderie, and pure Southern-cooking pleasure he experienced as part of those meals imprinted on him deeply. After making the agonizing, brave choice to follow through on his passion for cooking, Kevin graduated with honors from the Art Institute of Atlanta and went on to work for several well-known Atlanta restaurants, most notably Woodfire Grill, where he held the position of executive chef. In 2009, Kevin appeared on Bravo’s award-winning series Top Chef – he finished as one of the top three finalists, and his earnest charm earned him the “Fan Favorite” voted on by the show’s viewers; he returned to compete in the spinoff series Top Chef Duels in 2014. In 2013, Kevin opened his innovative dim-sum style restaurant Gunshow in Atlanta; the restaurant has gone on to earn accolades from Esquire, GQ, and Bon Appetit. His next venture, a Southern family-style restaurant called Revival, draws its inspiration from those Granny-prepared dinners he loved growing up. Kevin has authored two cookbooks – Fire in my Belly, a James Beard award finalist, and Pure Pork Awesomeness, and he’s been the recipient of many awards and honors, among them the Art Institute of Atlanta’s Distinguished Alumni Award and semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation’s Rising Star Chef of the Year. Gillespie currently resides in the Serenbe Community, southwest of Atlanta, with his wife, Valerie. He is a member of Slow Food Atlanta, Southern Foodways Alliance, Chefs Collaborative, Georgia Organics, Community Farmers Markets Chefs Advisory Board and the Society for the Preservation of Traditional Southern Barbecue. In his spare time, he enjoys camping, playing music and braaing.
